Grand Filtech Supports the Localization of Ethylene Oligomerization Technology for High-Carbon Alpha-Olefins

High-carbon alpha-olefins (LAO, C6+) are core raw materials for strategic products such as high-end polyolefins, POE elastomers, and synthetic lubricants (PAO); they are often hailed as the "industrial MSG" of the new chemical materials sector. For a long time, China high-carbon alpha-olefin industry has suffered from a structural imbalance characterized by an overcapacity of low-end products and a shortage of high-end ones. Heavy reliance on imports for high-end products has constrained the independent, controllable upgrading of domestic industrial chains—including high-end polyolefins, POE elastomers, and premium lubricants—representing a critical bottleneck in the new chemical materials field.

To overcome these technical hurdles, China has long prioritized high-carbon alpha-olefins as a key area for technological breakthroughs and has rolled out a series of supportive policies. Backed by this policy support, PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical Company collaborated with several domestic technology firms to launch a pilot project for producing high-carbon alpha-olefins via ethylene oligomerization. This project marks the entry of the company's proprietary ethylene oligomerization technology into the engineering validation phase, effectively challenging the long-standing technological monopoly held by international giants in this sector.

While breakthroughs were achieved in the initial catalytic reaction phase of the ethylene oligomerization process, the most challenging issue proved to be the solid-liquid separation of the product and wax. Researchers tested various filtration devices but failed to find a satisfactory solution. To facilitate the localization of high-carbon alpha-olefin production, Grand Filtech’s engineers visit the project site, after six months of collaborative discussions and testing with the project's R&D team, they successfully developed a membrane filter that met all process requirements. This fully automated filter re high filtration precision(1μm) and discharges dry solid residue without wasting liquid material, playing a pivotal role in achieving a continuous and highly efficient ethylene oligomerization process.
